Welcome to the Health Impact Database on Sweeteners and Sweetness Enhancers (S&SEs). This database was developed as part of THE SWEET Project. The SWEET Project (Sweeteners and sweetness enhancers: Impact on health, obesity, safety and sustainability) is a 5-year multidisciplinary, multinational project involves stakeholders from across the food chain (consumers, patients, health professionals, scientists, policy makers and regulators) that took place between 2018 and 2023. The SWEET Project has created a publicly available and comprehensive Health Impact Database that includes human clinical information on all approved sweeteners.

Objective

The objective of this database is to collect information from randomized controlled clinical trials involving S&SEs into a comprehensive database. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to identify publications. This database will serve as a tool for investigators to understand the effects of S&SEs on various health effects and also identify research gaps. The information contained in this database can be useful to serve as fundamental information for systematic reviews and meta-analysis.

Content

The database contains information from randomized controlled clinical studies on S&SEs from January 2000 to September 2024 (Version 1.0) in English language, peer-reviewed journals. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to identify eligible publications.

Accessibility and Format

The Health Impact Database is publicly available and accessible via a web-based portal at www.sweetproject.eu and downloadable. A password-protected, read-only spreadsheet format is used for the Health Impact Database and lists the S&SEs corresponding health impacts.

Terms of Use

The Health Impact Database is for personal use. The Health Impact Database may be freely accessed, downloaded and stored under a new file name on a personal computer for personal use from sweetproject.eu. Altering the contents (including adding, deleting, modifying, corrupting any of the data) of The Health Impact Database on the Sweetproject.eu website is strictly prohibited. Storing and/or hosting the Health Impact Database on any other publicly accessible website portal, social media site or SharePoint site is strictly prohibited.
